Da Nang is winning the arrival and losing the second night. Tuổi Trẻ, at the Da Nang International Tourism Festival on 18 October, reported nearly 7.7 million international overnight visitors in the first nine months, up more than 28 percent on the year before, and an average stay of less than two days. The festival brought more than 300 tourism providers and 550 buyers, the city’s tourism association said. The complaint in the room was familiar: swimming, sightseeing, and shopping do not, by themselves, add a day.
The markets are not one market. South Korea was the largest, then China, then India. The paper says Korean visitors matter for resorts and golf, Indian visitors for weddings, conferences, and families, and Russian and other CIS visitors for longer beach-and-wellness stays. In the first half of the year the city recorded nearly 175,000 rounds of golf, up 5.6 percent, and 101 MICE groups with more than 28,400 people. It also hosted 28 international weddings. From Russia and the CIS, arrivals in the first eight months passed 411,000, up 94.2 percent. Hồ Kỳ Minh, standing vice-chairman of the city, said the shift he wants is from counting arrivals to lengthening stays, by tying the beach to golf, food, heritage, and wellness, and by tying Da Nang to Hoi An, Hue, and the rest of the central coast.
