Dong Hoi
A small coastal city in central Vietnam with a river-mouth beach and the airport for the Phong Nha caves. Walk Nhat Le beach and the riverfront, see the old citadel gate and the ruined Tam Toa bell tower, and buy sun-dried sweet potato at the market. One night suits travellers on their way to the caves.

You come for the mouth of the Nhật Lệ. Sand, small surf, fishing boats, and the older bridge sit in one frame, with the city on the near bank and Bảo Ninh’s coconuts across the water. The ward page names sunset as the hour for the beach. The coast of the old city is given as 12 km. Nhật Lệ 2 is the night shape that page describes: one A-tower, two spans of 150 m, and a tower of 98 m, lit after dark. This page has no photograph of the whole tower, so the bridge is not a sight card.
Stay if the beach night is the point. Head for Phong Nha village if the boat cave is the trip. The park puts Phong Nha Cave 50 km southeast of Đồng Hới and does not print the minutes. The ward page says about 50 km and does not name the compass point. Do not pair the beach with a same-day cave and a same-day flight. Head for Hue if the citadel is the trip. The rail posts are 166 km apart. That figure is the railway, not the highway.
The center walk is the gate, the short walls, Tam Toa, and the statue. Quảng Bình Quan is the south gate of the Lũy Thầy line, not a Hue citadel. The ward page says Đào Duy Từ had the rampart built in 1631, the gate rebuilt in brick and stone in 1825, and repaired in 1961. A shorter visitor note dates the Nguyễn lords’ work from 1630. The portal says bombs nearly destroyed the gate in 1965 and it was restored again. The citadel survives as short sections, a moat, an east gate, and an arched bridge toward the river. Tam Toa is the ruined bell tower in the central park. Mother Suốt is the memorial of a wartime ferry, not a working boat.
Bảo Ninh is the peninsula across the river, still this city. The ward page describes a long straight beach, a whale temple, and an old rampart. The walking street on Phan Bội Châu and Đồng Hải is about 1 km, printed as 18:00–24:00 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. One source. On other nights that page sends you to the river path and the sunset, and it does not name a bar street. On site you can rent a bicycle, a motorbike, an electric car, or a taxi. No fare is printed.
