Where it comes from

The central coast. Nam Ô village, on the shore toward Hai Van, is the old address for the fish salad.

How to enjoy it

Eat it as a shared plate with the herb pile and the dip. It is not a noodle soup.

In Da Nang, the Nam Ô fish is dressed as soon as it is landed, the fish smell is taken off, and the dipping sauce is made for this salad. In town, the herring plate, gỏi cá trích, is a city lunch. Ride to Nam Ô only when the north shore is already the plan.

In Dong Hoi the fish is usually grouper or cá mai, sliced thin, cooked in lime juice at the table, and rolled in rice paper with herbs.

Where to try it

In Da Nang, gỏi cá trích is on Trần Cao Vân. Gỏi cá Nam Ô is in Nam Ô, on the shore toward Hai Van.

In Dong Hoi, gỏi cá is in seafood rooms in the center and in boat restaurants on the Nhật Lệ.
