Volcanic crater lake north of Pleiku

Walk the shore of Biển Hồ, a crater lake about 7 km north of Pleiku. Come at first light, while mist is still on the water. The tea slopes are the same northern loop, so keep them with the lake. Skip it if you wanted a sea swim. Boat hire and any shore ticket are Check on arrival.

Turn off Phạm Văn Đồng, Quốc lộ 14, at the Biển Hồ junction and follow Tôn Đức Thắng to the water. The lake sits about 7 km north of Pleiku. It is a trace of three extinct volcanoes, freshwater, not a beach. Walk the shore and the viewpoints. The tea slopes are the same northern loop: about 12 km from town, left off Quốc lộ 14 onto Lê Văn Sỹ for about 3 km, then along the irrigation dam road. Stay off the harvest paths.

Come while mist is still on the water. November to April are the drier months on these highland roads. Chu Đăng Ya, about 30 km northeast, is the other crater if the afternoon is dry. That rim is about 500 m above sea level, and the path up from Ploi lagri village has steep, slippery sections. The lake is the morning. The volcano is the longer ride.

Getting there and around

The lake is north of Pleiku. From the center, follow Phạm Văn Đồng, Quốc lộ 14, to the Biển Hồ junction, then Tôn Đức Thắng to the shore. The distance is about 7 km. Minutes and the fare are Check on arrival.
