Ethnic groups
Vietnam counts 54 ethnic groups. See the museum in Hanoi, then a valley that invites you, and ask before a portrait.

Where
Start at the Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi if you want the map before the valley. Then go to Sa Pa, Ha Giang, Mai Chau, Pu Luong, or the Tay villages at Ba Be.
Hmong, Dao, and Tay communities live in those northern hills and valleys. Tay houses at Ba Be are the stilt houses by the water. Ede communities are part of the highlands around Buon Ma Thuot. What people wear is local and specific. Do not treat a market as a costume stop.
How to behave
Ask before a close photo of a person or a ceremony. A homestay rate, a herbal bath, and a guide fee are Check on arrival.
What you wear into a temple is on the street manners page: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off.
