Valley terraces Ruộng bậc thang Pù Luông

Rice terraces on a limestone valley

Give the morning to the terrace walls, with the limestone ridge behind the crop. Stay if that valley is the trip. Go to Mai Chau for Bản Lác, and to Ninh Binh for the boats. Late May to early June is green young rice. September and October are gold. One note calls both windows golden. The fee and the hour are check on arrival.

The valley

Rice scenery

Walk the edges of the terraces in the morning. Late May to early June is green young rice, and September and October are ripe gold. One note calls both of those windows ripe and golden, so a May field is not a gold field on the other accounts. Bamboo water wheels lift stream water onto the fields. They are scattered, and no single wheel has an address.

The fields are the view from a stilt house if you sleep at Bản Đôn, in old Thành Lâm, now inside xã Pù Luông. Bản Hiêu and the hamlets Son, Bá, and Mười sit in xã Cổ Lũng. The hour and the fee are check on arrival.

Getting there and around

The terraces are the valley floor and the lower slopes, especially around Bản Đôn and on the Hiêu side. If you sleep at Bản Đôn, the fields are the view from the house. Bicycles are offered on the valley road, with steeper lanes if you want them. Homestays often lend a bicycle without a charge. That often is one account. The charge is check on arrival.

From Bản Đôn

On foot from the house. The fields start at the foot of the hill. Check the minutes on arrival.

From Hanoi

By road. One distance is about 210 km. Another is about 160 km southwest, with a limousine of about 4.5 hours from Giáp Bát or Mỹ Đình. Check the minutes on arrival. A car or a motorbike hired in Hanoi is the usual road.
