Salt pans
For a dry-season morning, December to May, if the raking is the reason you came.
The pans are along đường Duyên Hải in the old town, in the fields at Lý Nhơn, now inside xã An Thới Đông, and on đảo Thiềng Liềng in xã Thạnh An. On 10 March 2024 the area was about 1,500 ha at those three places, with crystals in 7–10 days of hard sun. On 14 January 2020 about 1,200 ha were in production, more than 1,000 ha on tarpaulin, a yield of 80 tons a hectare, and 7–9 days from the first crystal to harvest. The season is December–May. Most pans now crystallize on tarpaulin. The city recognized the Cần Thạnh village as a traditional craft village.
Go after sunrise on a hard sunny day. The picture is at dawn, and the heavy part of the job is the noon rake. Thạnh An is the island commune the 2025 resolution did not rearrange. Salt is what people carry home.
