Han Swing Bridge Cầu quay Sông Hàn

The Han bridge that turns for ships

Stand on the bank late at night and watch the middle of the Han swing bridge pivot about 90 degrees to let ships pass, then swing back. The 487.7-meter bridge opened in 2000 and joins Le Duan to Pham Van Dong. Watching is free, but the turn is late and not every night, so check the time before you stay up.

Come late and stand on the bank. The bridge joins Le Duan in Hai Chau to Pham Van Dong in Son Tra, at the Le Duan–Tran Phu junction. Work started on 2 September 1998 and the bridge opened on 29 March 2000. It is 487.7 meters long and 12.9 meters wide, with 11 spans and two cable-stayed spans totaling 122.7 meters.

The turn is the show. On Saturday and Sunday nights the middle span swings about 90 degrees from around 23:00 and is back by about midnight. Large ships rarely pass now, so a turn on another night is often maintenance, in the small hours. Do not count on a weeknight.

There is no ticket for watching from the bank. In daylight the deck and the blue sail-shaped pylon are the picture, with motorbikes crossing over the river.

Getting there and around

The west end is the Le Duan–Tran Phu junction. From a hotel on Bach Dang, walk to that end. From My Khe, cross the river by Grab.
