Thái Vi stands on the site of Vũ Lâm, the base the early Trần kings held in these hills. Trần Thái Tông founded the base in the 13th century, and in 1285 Trần Thánh Tông and Trần Nhân Tông beat part of the Mongol-Yuan army nearby. The temple honours the Trần kings.

The building you see is in the Nguyễn style: one hall of three bays on 28 stone columns 3.2 m high, 22 of them square. Beside it the bell tower from the Duy Tân reign rises two storeys with eight roofs on 32 ironwood columns. The temple became a national historic relic in 1994.
On the path up from the river you pass Động Thiên Hương, a dry cave about 15 m up the cliff. From the temple, carry on to Bích Động on the same ticket.
