The Leng

Family

You sleep in a Tay stilt house on the Leng, where it meets the lake. The village is in xa Ba Be, Thai Nguyen. Older lines still place it in xa Nam Mau, huyen Ba Be, Bac Kan. Nearly 100 stilt roofs stand here, some a century old, and about 80 percent of the old stilt houses are still standing. About 40 residents is a different count, not a second roof tally. Nearly 60 homestay households were counted in the old Nam Mau commune. A room that looks at the lake is one of the houses. Fuller facilities sit 1–2 km off the shore at the park gate.

The day starts with the house meal and the walk to the landing. The house may offer a walk, weaving, an instrument, or fishing. After the meal, then singing and the đàn tính are the evening when the hamlet troupe is called, with leaf-yeast wine. The hour the village goes quiet is Check on arrival.

Getting there and around

The village is the base, on the Leng against the lake. A last-mile motorbike runs from the park gate into the village. Minutes from the gate to the house are Check on arrival. Cho Ra is the commune on the north edge. The 5 km figure is the distance to Puong, not a measured walk from the market to these houses.

From the park gate

A last-mile motorbike runs from the gate into the village. Fuller facilities sit 1–2 km off the shore. Minutes and a fare are Check on arrival.

From Hanoi

By road. The kilometre counts from Hanoi disagree, and they stop short of the village. The last minutes are Check on arrival.
