The town is the west-coast fishing port on the Ông Đốc. Houses stand over the river. The whale temple is Lăng Ông Nam Hải. On an ordinary day you walk the bank. On the rite days the boats escort Ông from the temple to the fish port and then to sea.

The rite sits on the 14th and 15th of the second lunar month. In 2026 the 15th was 2 April, counted as the 101st time from a temple dated 1925. In 2025 the peak window was 11–17 March, with the opening on the evening of 13 March, and more than 90 fishing boats registered. The next solar dates move with the lunar calendar. The rite has been national intangible heritage since 2021.
The port is thị trấn Sông Đốc, huyện Trần Văn Thời, and also xã Sông Đốc. Hòn Đá Bạc is the granite farther along the Gulf, on its own road.
