After dark, Ta Hien is where the Old Quarter sits down for a beer: low tables and blue plastic stools pushed out across the street, grills and menu boards along the shopfronts, and the crowd shuffling between them. Order bia hoi, Hanoi’s fresh draft beer, at the corner with Luong Ngoc Quyen. Come after dinner, not in the daytime, when the street is quiet.

The corner of Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen is the bia hoi corner of the Old Quarter. Once it is dark the bars and kitchens set low tables and plastic stools across the pavement and into the road, and the lane becomes one long terrace.

Bia hoi is Hanoi’s fresh draft beer, unpasteurized and drunk soon after it is made, and sitting on a sidewalk stool with a glass of it is a local habit. Take a stool, order a glass, and watch the lane go past.
By day the same street is quiet: lanterns, shutters, and a few bicycles on the wet paving. Come back after dinner for the corner.
Getting there and around
Ta Hien is in the lanes north of Hoan Kiem Lake. Walk north from the lake into the quarter and follow the noise to the corner with Luong Ngoc Quyen.
