The house is at 4 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, the street that meets the Japanese bridge. A Vietnamese merchant built it more than a hundred years ago, and the name Phùng Hưng means prosperity. It was a shop for cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, porcelain, and glass. The eighth generation still lives here and looks after it.

The building is three schools in one tube house. The balcony and the doors are Chinese. The middle bay has a four-direction roof, tứ hải, in the Japanese manner. The timber frame, the beams, and the two-direction roofs on the front and back bays are Vietnamese. Eighty ironwood columns sit on stone feet so the wood does not touch the ground. The doors can be taken down, the eaves brackets are carved as carp, and upstairs the family keeps an altar to Thiên Hậu.
Come in the morning. Old houses are optional stops on the old-town ticket.
