Cantonese Assembly Hall Hội quán Quảng Đông
Cantonese hall with a pottery dragon
The Cantonese merchants’ hall, built in 1885, with a pottery dragon fountain in the front court and a hall of carved wood and stone behind it. It began as a place for Thiên Hậu and Confucius; after 1911 the worship turned to Quan Công. A short stop on the old-town loop.

Cantonese merchants built the hall in 1885, first for Thiên Hậu and Confucius. After 1911 the worship turned to Quan Công and the founding merchants, the Tiền Hiền. A pottery dragon fountain fills the court. That is the frame you recognise before you reach the hall.

Inside are four large horizontal boards, a bronze censer 1.6 metres high and 0.6 metres wide, and a pair of Chinese celadon pedestals. The wood and stone structure is the point of the visit. The hall marks Nguyên tiêu on the 15th of the first lunar month and Quan Công’s day on the 24th of the sixth lunar month.
If you only enter one hall, the long Fujian hall on Trần Phú is the other choice. This one is the dragon court.
Getting there and around
The hall is in the old town. Walk from Trần Phú and ask for Hội quán Quảng Đông, the court with the pottery dragon.
If the night is by the old town, search Old Town hotels.
