Lao Chai is the village on the older route from town through Ý Linh Hồ to Tả Van. The houses and the terraces sit on the slope, with the ridge behind them. You walk through on the way to Ta Van. The stretch that includes both villages is 8–12 km and takes 3–5 hours.
