Center to center: about 140 km and more than 140 km, with about 3 hours or more than 3 hours by car and about 5 hours or nearly 5 hours by motorbike. A road-authority minute count for this leg: Check on arrival. A 2017 line says the upgrade cut Hòa Bình–Sơn La time by nearly one hour. That is not a 2026 minute count. Noi Bai is the airport. Nà Sản, in xã Chiềng Mung and Mai Sơn, is in the national airport plan and is not a 2026 passenger service. No rail station is named. Bản Mòng: nearly 6 km, about 5 km, and about 7 km. Pha Đin: the pass itself is 32 km. The start is 66 km west of Sơn La town, and also 65 km. The end is about 84 km from Điện Biên city, and the summit is also 80 km from Điện Biên Phủ. Best monthsOctober–April for the dry road

The old prison’s stone walls stand on Khau Ca, and the town and the Nam La sit in the bowl under them. The ridges close the valley behind the hill. Stay if that night is the trip. Sleep in Moc Chau if you wanted the tea rows on the plateau before this city. Do not drive on to Dien Bien the same day when the hill over the town is the reason you stopped.

The bed is a small hotel or guesthouse in the town center. From 1 July 2025 that center is phường Tô Hiệu, the old Chiềng Lề market street. The other bed is a Thái stilt house at Bản Mòng, xã Hua La, on the edge of the city. The name thành phố Sơn La is still in use, with the wards Chiềng Cơi and Quyết Thắng, and also phường Chiềng Cơi, tỉnh Sơn La, without the words thành phố. Two Saturday nights a month, Hoàng Quốc Việt is a walking street from 19:30 to 23:00, from the Highway 6 junction to the turn into bản Mé Ban.

Give the morning to the central market, then the climb to Khau Ca for the prison and the museum beside it. About one hour for the prison and about one hour for the museum, on one split. Late afternoon, the Lê Thái Tông temple looks back over the stream. Bản Mòng is the other half of the day, or the night in the stilt house. The dam on the Đà is a separate morning, north on Highway 279. The mistake is treating the museum ticket and the relic ticket as one price, or budgeting the whole day for a hill that sits in town.

Getting there and around

The usual start is Hanoi, and the road is National Highway 6, past the Moc Chau plateau. Noi Bai is the airport travelers use. Nà Sản is in the national airport plan and is not a 2026 passenger service. Do not book a flight into it. No rail station is named.

In town, Highway 6 is the street the coaches use through the valley. Highway 279 leaves north for Mường La and the dam. The prison is a walk up Khau Ca from the center. Bản Mòng is a paved road to Hua La.

West, Highway 6 climbs Pha Đin toward Điện Biên. The pass is not this city. Yên Châu is the district town on this highway between Mộc Châu and the city. Hòa Bình is the city on the coach road toward Hanoi. Mai Châu is the valley before the plateau.
