Cannon Fort Pháo đài Thần Công

Hilltop fort above the town and the bay

Hilltop fort above town: ride up 10 minutes, walk its tunnels, and see Lan Ha Bay from above. Come late in the day for sunset over the islands. A cafe at the top sells drinks with the view.

The town

War historyPhotography

The fort sits on hill 177, built in 1942 to guard the sea approach to the island. Stone-walled trenches and vaulted tunnels run deep into the hill to a command post and concrete bunkers, most of them still intact.

From the summit you look down on Bến Bèo, the Cát Cò beaches, and Áng Thảm, and out across Lan Ha's limestone islands. A large mounted viewer at the top helps you pick out the details. Late afternoon brings the sunset over the archipelago.

The gun on show is a damaged display piece that never fired in battle.

Getting there and around

The road winds up from the town center for a few kilometres, about 10 minutes by car or motorbike, with the hill on one side and Cát Bà bay and Bến Bèo on the other.
