The lake and the lanes
Hoan Kiem is the landmark. The lanes north of it are the Old Quarter walk.
The lake
The lake path is free and open all day. Turtle Tower stands in the water, and at dawn the shore fills with people exercising and practising tai chi. Ngoc Son, on the island across the red The Huc bridge, is the one ticketed stop, and it stays open until 22:00 at weekends.
The lanes
St Joseph's Cathedral faces the square at 40 Nha Chung, two stone towers and a clock, just west of the lake.
Train Street runs through a residential lane from Le Duan toward Phung Hung. In March 2025 the Department of Tourism asked agencies to stop running tours there. If you go, go on your own and stay off the rails.
The grid north of the lake is the Old Quarter walk: Bach Ma and Dong Xuan sit on that loop. After dark, the bia hoi corner is Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen.
South of the lake
The Opera House is at 1 Trang Tien, columns and a dome on its own square, refurbished in 1997. It has been under renovation, so look up the programme on the theatre's website before you plan an evening inside.
