Shopping
The old-town market by day, the night-market streets after dark, and clay and carving from the craft villages.
Chợ Hội An
The yellow market hall sits inside the old town, with herb and vegetable sellers along the front and a food hall for cao lầu inside. Buy mắm cá cơm, the local anchovy sauce salted from fish off Cửa Đại and Cù Lao Chàm, and gift cakes such as bánh ú tro and bánh ít. Go in the daytime.
The night market
After dark the stalls run along Nguyễn Hoàng, Công nữ Ngọc Hoa, Trần Quý Cáp, and Bạch Đằng, close to the old-town centre. Come for the local bowls and a slow walk between the lantern streets and the river.
Thanh Hà clay
Thanh Hà, about 3 km west of the old town on the Thu Bồn, has made pots and tiles for more than 500 years, including the yin-yang roof tiles on the old houses. The small red clay animals are the thing to carry home.
Kim Bồng wood
Kim Bồng sits on the south bank of the Thu Bồn, opposite the old town. The village has worked wood since about the 16th century in four trades: building timber, household wood, boats, and decorative carving. The carved heads are that last trade, and the village has been national intangible heritage since 2016.
The silk village
Làng lụa Hội An, at 28 Nguyễn Tất Thành, was recognised as a local tourism site in 2018, on the same list as Kim Bồng and Thanh Hà.
