Dinh Cau Dinh Cậu

Temple on the rocks at Dương Đông

Rock temple in Dương Đông: stand on the point at sunset, then watch the squid boats light the water. Built in 1937 for Cậu, a deity over the waters, to protect boats in heavy weather. It is also a pagoda and a lighthouse shrine to the goddess of the sea. The visit is the late afternoon.

Islands

Stand at Dinh Cậu for the sunset, then stay as the beach empties and the squid boats light the water. The temple was built in 1937 for Cậu, a deity with authority over the waters, to protect boats in heavy weather. After dark the lights on the water look like a city. The building is also called Dinh Cau Temple and Dinh Cau Pagoda. Sailors pray to the goddess of the sea, and the lighthouse doubles as a shrine to her, with the view over the harbour.

Bãi Trường starts at Mũi Dinh Cậu, so the temple is the north end of that sand, in Dương Đông. The streets near the rock temple close to traffic from 5 pm until midnight for the market. Come for the light, then walk into the stalls if the catch is the dinner.

Getting there and around

Dinh Cậu stands on the Dương Đông shore, at Mũi Dinh Cậu, where Bãi Trường begins. The town sits in the west-centre of the island. Walk to the temple from a room in town. From a room on the long beach, it is the north end of the sand.

If the night is on Long Beach, search Phu Quoc hotels.
