The statue stands on Small Mountain above the point where Back Beach meets Pineapple Beach. It dates from 1974 and is 32 metres tall. You climb about 800 steps to the feet, then about 100 more to the shoulders, where people stand on the arms to look over the city and the sea.

Go in the morning, before the heat makes the climb hard. Dress as you would for a church. Entry is free. If you would rather not climb, take a motorbike taxi.
The lighthouse is on the same headland. Make it your second stop, for the sunset over the East Sea.
