Reclining Buddha temple on the Small Mountain shore
A seaside temple on Small Mountain: climb 37 steps to a 12 m reclining Buddha, then the terrace above. Built from 1969 to 1974, it also has a mosaic dragon boat and a 3,500 kg bronze bell. It is a different temple from Thích Ca Phật Đài on Big Mountain. Pair it with the Christ statue above the same cove.

Niết Bàn Tịnh Xá sits halfway along Bãi Dứa, Pineapple Beach, on the Small Mountain slope facing the East Sea. It was built from 1969 to 1974. Climb 37 steps to the main hall, where the 12 metre reclining Buddha lies with his head on his right hand, toward the north, and the soles of his feet carved with symbols.

From the hall a way leads up to the upper terrace, cut into the hillside, with flowers and a view over the sea and the Pineapple Beach cove. Behind it is the Prajna boat, a large dragon covered in porcelain mosaic, filled with fresh water and fish. The bell tower beside it holds a bronze bell 2.8 metres tall and weighing 3,500 kg.
Come in the afternoon, when the gilded Buddhas on the upper altar catch the sun.
Getting there and around
The temple is at 60/7 Hạ Long, the shore road round Small Mountain, above Pineapple Beach. The Christ statue is above the same cove.
From Back Beach
Round the south end of Small Mountain on Hạ Long to Pineapple Beach, by taxi or motorbike taxi.
From Front Beach
South along Hạ Long, the shore road, to Pineapple Beach.
