The city now includes the former Ba Ria–Vung Tau and Binh Duong provinces. The center visitors walk is still District 1.

Ho Chi Minh City Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest city and the usual end of a north-to-south trip. District 1 holds the Opera House, Dong Khoi, and Ben Thanh Market. Three days covers the center, a museum, and either Cu Chi or a delta day.

The city is still called Saigon by many residents, and that name fits the center: a tight commercial downtown that grew under French rule and then kept growing. The walkable visitor core is District 1. Cholon, the Chinese commercial district, is a separate half-day.

Eat com tam, broken rice, and a bowl of pho in the south’s sweeter style. Use the War Remnants Museum if you want the documentary record, and allow time; it is not a light hour. The Reunification Palace is the other standard stop, a preserved 1960s government building.

Common questions

Is Ho Chi Minh City the same as Saigon?
Saigon is the older name and still the everyday name for the center. Ho Chi Minh City is the official name, and after 2025 it covers a wider area than the downtown you will walk.
How many days do you need?
Three days for the center and one excursion. Add a night in Can Tho if the delta is more than a checkbox.

Food, markets, and the city’s war-history museums. The beach is not here; Vung Tau and Phu Quoc are separate rides or flights.

Getting there and around

Tan Son Nhat is close by Asian-capital standards and still slow at rush hour. GrabCar is the default. Walking works inside District 1 if you treat motorbike traffic as the rule of the road: cross with a steady pace, not a dash.

The first metro line is useful on its own corridor and does not link every sight. For Cu Chi and the delta, book a car or a tour rather than improvising at the bus station with luggage.
