Hanoi Hà Nội

Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and the usual start of a northern trip. The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the French-built streets south of the lake are the parts most visitors walk. It is also the base for Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, and the mountain towns.

Hanoi sits on the Red River in northern Vietnam. The walkable center is smaller than the city. Hoan Kiem Lake is the landmark. The Old Quarter spreads north of the lake in a tight grid of commercial lanes. The wider streets around the Opera House, built during French colonial rule, sit to the south.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Three days is enough to walk the center, eat well, and add one museum or pagoda without turning the city into a checklist. Use Hanoi as a base rather than a place to cross in a single afternoon on the way to the bay.

Districts

  • Old Quarter — The Old Quarter is the tight grid of lanes north of Hoan Kiem Lake. Streets still carry traces of the old guild trades. It is the easiest place to stay on a first night and the easiest place to overpay for a meal.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Hanoi?
Three days covers the center and one museum or pagoda. Add nights if you are using the city only as a base for Ninh Binh or the bay.
Is Hanoi walkable?
The Old Quarter and the lake are walkable. Cross streets slowly and steadily. Motorbikes do not stop the way city traffic does in some other countries.

Side trips from Hanoi

Hanoi by interest

Come to Hanoi for street food, a walkable old commercial district, and coffee. Pagodas and the Temple of Literature reward a focused morning. The city is also the rail and bus hub for Sapa, Ninh Binh, and Ha Long.

Getting there and around

Noi Bai Airport is north of the city. A metered taxi, a ride-hailing car, or the airport bus takes about 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. The urban metro is useful on a few corridors and does not replace walking or a car for most visitor routes.

Inside the center, walk. For the Temple of Literature, the French Quarter, or West Lake, use GrabCar or GrabBike. Agree the trip in the app. Street taxis exist; use a marked meter and watch the route.
